The Global Champion of No-Dig Gardening
Charles Dowding is a pioneering British organic gardener, author, and teacher who has revolutionised home vegetable growing with his advocacy and practical perfection of the No-Dig gardening method. Starting his journey in 1982, he has over 40 years of experience, dedicating his life to cultivating healthy, nutrient-rich food while significantly reducing garden labour. Based in Somerset, England, Dowding runs a highly productive market garden and uses his plot to conduct famous side-by-side trials that consistently prove the efficacy of his no-dig approach over traditional digging.
The No-Dig Philosophy and Method
The core of Charles Dowding’s philosophy is rooted in soil health and minimal disturbance, working with the natural processes of the soil ecosystem, rather than against them.
Key Principles:
- Minimal Soil Disturbance: The fundamental principle is to avoid digging or tilling the soil. Digging damages the delicate structure created by earthworms, fungal networks (mycelium), and other microorganisms, releasing carbon and setting the soil back. By maintaining the natural structure, the soil retains better drainage, water retention, and nutrient availability.
- Surface Feeding: Instead of incorporating amendments into the soil, the soil is fed from the surface. This involves applying a layer of organic matter, typically compost (around 1-4 inches deep), directly on top of the soil or existing beds each year. This mimics how nutrients are recycled on a forest floor.
- Weed Suppression: The compost layer acts as a mulch, smothering annual weed seeds and perennial weeds (when combined with an initial layer of cardboard on very weedy ground). This dramatically reduces weeding time, a key advantage of the method.
Dowding’s work demonstrates that no-dig gardens require less effort (saving time on digging and weeding), grow healthier plants, and produce higher crop yields compared to traditionally dug beds.
Teaching and Public Outreach
Charles Dowding is a prolific author and educator, sharing his methods globally through multiple platforms:
- Bestselling Books: His many books, such as No Dig: Nurture Your Soil to Grow Better Veg with Less Effort and Organic Gardening: The Natural No-Dig Way, offer practical, detailed guides for gardeners of all levels.
- Video Content: His highly popular YouTube channel features garden tours, detailed crop-by-crop guides, and explanations of his long-running dig vs. no-dig comparison trials.
- Education: He runs in-person and online courses on no-dig gardening, composting, and seasonal planting, empowering people to transition to a simpler, more sustainable gardening lifestyle.

Seed Starting With Charles Dowding Propagation Trays
The Containerwise range of propagation trays created in partnership with Charles Dowding have been crafted to promote growth season after season thanks to their durability and unique design.
- Long-life, durable seed trays: The partnership with ‘no dig’ gardening specialist Charles Dowding began in early 2020. Having been aware of our long-life propagation trays for a number of years and using our 77L trays, Charles was seeking a tray which was long-life, UV stabilised and economical on compost, whilst producing high quality seedlings/plants. The result? The CD60 tray.
- Innovative design for optimal growth: The CD60 seed tray features tapered cells that require less compost and prevent water logging around the roots, resulting in robust, healthy seedlings. The wide holes at the bottom of each cell allow plants to be easily pushed up, ensuring the root ball remains intact during transplanting.
- An expanding range: Following the CD60’s launch in December 2022, Containerwise were inundated with positive feedback and requests to develop 15 and 30-cell versions of this popular seed tray. CD15 and CD30 trays were launched in spring 2022 and provide smaller sizes to accommodate different gardening needs.
